Behind the Song: Imagine a single sailboat on the ocean, salt water spray, an endless horizon. Picture being a teenager, out there alone, sailing around the world. It becomes a meditation on the elements, the self, improbability and the heart.
Laura Dekker, in August of 2010, at 14 years old, with the consent of her father, set sail from her homeland, the Netherlands, and arrived back in Sint Maarten 518 days later, having become the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe—solo.
I remembered her when I was quarantined, looking out on a marina of sailing ships in British Columbia. The song is a reflection on fathers, daughters, and facing the world inside and out.
